Federal officials seized 109 kilograms of elvers at Toronto Pearson International Airport on May 15.
Valued at $400,00 to $500,000, it’s the first seizure made by the Canada Border Services Agency of the juvenile American eels.
“The magnitude of this elver seizure is an important development,” said Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier in a written statement.
